I recently underwent a colonoscopy and it was only comparable to the pain I experienced during natural childbirth but without the for warning or preparation. Having read the reports of other patients who have experienced similar excruciating pain, which, by the way, have been recorded over a period of years, I cannot understand why this procedure should continue be so distressingly painful for some people. Surely there are alternatives to this suffering and if so, I think we have a right to receive them, just as they do in other countries, Germany for example.
There seems to be no proper investigation into the cause for such extreme pain in certain cases and no pain in other except mentions of IBS, however something is causing this and it is surely time to find out what and to put an end it.
I was told I couldnt have full sedation as I would have to remain awake to expel the air pumped in and also to move when needed. I now find this nonsense as I know there are cases where people have full sedation.
I think that preventing pain must be a priority within our NHS and also preventing more serious and potentially life threatening conditions. If procedures cannot be carried out due to termination caused by excessive pain during the process, then something vital could be missed.
