"I was set up on the FLO data base system, which has been amazing"

About: Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust / Community nursing

(as the patient),

I have recently been diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic.

My GP practice in Winster has been the most wonderful experience ive ever had of a GP practice. I cannot fault the care, attention and support which I have been given over the last few months.

I was then referred to the Diabetic Nurse Consultant, and even more fabulous care. Nothing has been too much trouble, the support given was second to none. I was also set up on the FLO data base system, which has been amazing...where I enter via phone text my blood sugars, I then get a reply to say if my bms are in or out of range. If they are out of range ie high or low, then I get a message to let me know what to do, Specialist Diabetic Nurse then also gets flagged the results.

The flo system (as was explained to me), has many uses, sending txt messages to prompt medications to anyone within DCHS.  This is such a wonderful tool, yes i'm sure that it has its teething problems. DCHS pay a lot of money for this database system, I am a District Nurse and I work within DCHS, and I have never heard of it. I can see many uses for this tool...So why are we not using it?  Please promote it, roll it out so it can be used more widely. It has given me the much needed support without having to bother people when not really needed. A cheap mobile phone can be provided for patients', and the texts are free. Carers can now take a patients bm, enter it into the phone via text, get a reply which will then tell them what to do if high or low....job done.

A huge thank you to all the staff at Winster Surgery involved in my care, and the Specialist Diabetic Nurse Denyer. I just couldn't have managed without the care and support.

Dear Kimi,
Thank you for taking the time to send your comments about your diabetes care and in particular about your experience of using the telehealth system FLO.
I have sent your comments on to the FLO team and as a team we will continue to encourage other health professionals to use this system which we feel is changing the way we are delivering care.
I am pleased that you feel supported in your diabetes management by a team of community professionals and also Florence!
Best wishes.

Michelle Denyer, Lead Community Diabetes Specialist Nurse
