"Care of my 86 year old father who was suffering from Alzheimer's and bowel cancer."

About: East Of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust / Emergency ambulance Luton & Dunstable Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a relative),

My 86 year old father who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's suddenly stopped eating and within two weeks became incontinent and so weak that I could not get him out of bed. I was working full time and trying to care for him and could not get any help from social services. His G. P. refused to make a house call and the '111' service also refused to come out to him. I could see that he was dying, so in desperation my brother and I dialled a '999' ambulance.

The paramedics who came out were extremely professional, efficient, caring and respectful. The attention that my father received in A and E was also excellent with two amazing young nurses who were just finishing a twelve hour shift and two doctors providing the utmost care. My father was eventually moved to ward 14, a high dependency ward, where the nursing staff and doctors were incredible. They tried everything possible to help him and throughout the treatment, he was always kept clean and comfortable.

At the end, a young Portuguese nurse who had been a primary carer stayed with my father and held his hand while she was calling my brother and I to come to the hospital. She, in particular, was an absolute angel but I will always be grateful for the care that my father received from everyone at the Luton and Dunstable hospital.
