"abrubt GP"

About: NHS Highland (Health)

(as a relative),

Today I attended an appointment at my husbands to our GP in Argyll and Bute, previously my husband has stated that the GP had been quite unhelpful and he asked me to come along for a bit of support. I can honestly say I was left dumbstruck with the way his GP spoke to both my husband and myself. It was not only rude and abrupt, it was actually quite frightening and intimidating. My husband has quite significant mental health issues and after attending his previous appointment in November he was shaking, sweating and feeling totally hopeless. I am a fully qualified nurse and worked in the NHS for many years and I have never ever seen anyone being treated so appallingly.

Not only did he treat both my husband and myself with complete contempt he also took it upon himself to talk about a previous appointment that I had had with him that made him feel "very annoyed". Not only was that incredibly insulting but also a breach of confidentiality to discuss any part of my medical history with anyone. I suffer from quite bad OCD and thankfully I am now under the care of the psychiatric team but I live in a small rural location with one GP practice and two GP's so it frightens me that if I ever feel ill the thought of ever having to go back to the GP.

I have been left shaken and frightened after what should have been a simple appointment.

Dear Muchbetternow

I am also shaken by your feedback and very dismayed. I am so sorry and would like to help.

Senior NHS Highland colleagues in Argyll and Bute (Dr Mike Hall, clinical director and Christina West, chief officer) have read your posting and also been in touch with me wanting to assist.

We are very keen for you to speak to Dr Hall In the first instance. If that would be helpful then I can get that organised.

Please do email me to Maimie.thompson@nhs.net or call me 01463 704722 and we can discuss what you would find most helpful for you and your husband.

Hi there,

Thank you for your prompt response, I have emailed you at the email address provided.

I am really worried about the repercussions of this complaint in case the GP gets really annoyed.

Kind Regards
