"Care in A&E and Hyper Acute Stroke ward"

About: East Surrey Hospital

I count myself very fortunate that the ambulance that picked me up after a slight stroke took me to the East Surrey Hospital in Redhill. From the moment of my arrival at the A&E department to my final discharge, I was treated with kindness and expertise that left nothing to be desired. Yes, there were moments when I waited longer than I would have preferred for a scan or a porter to take me back to the ward, but they were never unbearably long. I really felt secure in the knowledge of everyone involved in my care, from the consultant to the doctors and radiographers. The nurses and care assistants were unfailingly kind and good at their jobs. Everyone was cheerful and did their best to lift the spirits of even the most severely-affected patients.

Even the food was better than I had expected, cooked in the hospital's own kitchen, on-site - not always the case in the NHS.

One last thing: anyone who complains about too many non-British people working in this country should spend a few days at the East Surrey Hospital. I was looked after by staff from Lebanon, Finland, Poland, Portugal, Italy, and probably from other countries as well, and was extremely glad they are working here! Our NHS, and our country, would be a lot worse off if they were not here.

I would unhesitatingly recommend the East Surrey Hospital for anyone who suffers a stroke.

Thank you for taking the time to post such positive feedback about your recent stay in East Surrey Hospital. It is good to read that you felt so well looked after and cared for whilst you were with us.

I wanted particularly to comment on what you have written about the diversity of the workforce in the hospital. I'm sure we are fairly typical in the NHS in having such a diverse range of staff working for us across all professions and staff groups.

In Estates and Facilities – my own principal area of responsibility - alone we have colleagues from more than 40 different countries of birth - all of whom are now part of the NHS family and contributing to the quality of service that I am pleased you experienced so clearly. As you say we would be much worse off without them.
