"4 year old trauma to arm"

On tuesday the 30th of december at 14:45 I received a phone call from my wife that she was on her way to the RVI with our daughter as she had fallen down the stairs and injured her arm. I got away fromwork and arrived at the A&E at about 15:30.

as i approahed the reception desk a member of staff looked up with a smile and asked how they could help. I cant express how important that first contact is when you are rushing in to an A&E after a pone call of that nature. i did not catch the persons name but they quickly directed me to the childrens section. I bused through the door and again was met with a smile by the nurse at the desk. I explained I was here for my daughter, and at that point i herd my daughter calling me from behind. She was being wheeled to xray and my wife told me she had just had morphine. I was great to see them and it soon became apparent my daughter had brocken her arm, however the morphine was doing its job. the nurse and porter who accompanied us were excellent. The nurse was very chatty and helped put us at ease. Then we went in for xray and again the radiographer was so good with my daughter. next we were back on A&E in a room we knew by then the arm was definitly a displased break. Te doctor came in and explained an opeation the following day was required and the surgion woud review the case in the morning. The nurses came back in put on a temp cast and off to ward 10 we went.

again greated on ward 10 by a number of saff all exstreamly profesional and they all gave great care of my daughter. They explained what the care plan was and my wife woud be staying over with our daughter. i disapeared to the food caught and came back with food for my wife , my daughter got fed by the ward.

The following day the sergical team came arround and explained what was happening and the concent form was signed. My daughter had her op whch my wife was able to go with her upto the point she was put to seep. after the op my daughter was brougt back to the ward for recovery. She was staying in again I finished work and arrived that afternoon. My daughter was recovering well. if she continued we would have her home new years eve, and after a few other hoops to jump through we got her home.

The whole experiance was frantic from apearents point of view hoever at every turn the staff of the A&E and ward 10 were excellent. My wife and I were kept in formed and treat with respec, my daughter was loving the attention. I could not pick one member of staff out as all were equally as good however my daughter took to a particular nurse on ward 10.

All in all every one we met made a distressing situation a three days of informed excellent care. This experiance just goes to show how proud we should be of our NHS and especially every one we came in to contact with in the RVI A&E and ward 10. Thank you so much to all of you and we know my daughter will receive excellent care in her follow up plan. Please can you pass my comments on to ward 10 and A&E.
