"Hip replacement surgery"

About: Derriford Hospital

I had my right hip replaced just before Christmas. This was my second hip replacement, after my left was replaced 6 years ago. The whole experience was very positive and I felt that I was very well cared for at all stages. I had been nervous about having sedation plus a spinal for my anaesthetic this time rather than general plus spinal as I had previously. I had an idea that I might wake up during surgery and this worried me. However I would now recommend sedation to other hip replacement patients as it was much lighter than a general and I felt extremely well straight afterwards. I recovered on the ward very quickly and when all the Physio and OT checks plus X Ray had been completed, I was able to go home the day after surgery. That was wonderful as it meant I was at home for Christmas with my family round me to start my recovery. Well done to all in the orthopaedic department at Derriford for a really professional job and Thank You!
