"Having my baby in the rsch"

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital

I spent time in 3 different parts of the maternity area of the hospital. The labour ward were not at all helpful or kind during a very long and painful labour. Left me alone in the bath for a good half an our while I was on pethidine. I was so tired I would fall asleep with my eyes open while trying to stay awake. I was basically told to toughen up and given no pain relief (pethidine only helped me sleep as my labour lasted nearly 30 hours. Didn't help the pain) . They told me they were going to send me home and soon after, I began giving birth and they were completely shocked.

The staff who helped me give birth were really fantastic. They were really kind and helpful and made me feel well looked after.

The ward where you recover after birth were equally brilliant. So helpful and nice. Meals are all provided.

I am very pleased that you found the post natal ward and those who helped you give birth fantastic and I have given them this feedback .

I am sorry that you felt let down while in labour. It seems that the staff did not communicate that pethidine is a strong painkiller that can only be given in early labour, also it is normal for the midwives to leave patients to rest and sleep after being given pethidine.

I have spoken to the midwifery matron and she apologises for the poor communication and will discuss with the staff on labour ward.

I hope that you are well

Best wishes

Caroline Davies

Deputy Chief Nurse
