My Granddad is currently on ward F18 (for 6days) which is the most soulless and throughly depressing place I have ever been. I've wept every time I've left him because he has to stay there, & it is horrific.
My Granddad is in his 90s but completely in control of his faculties & in hospital due to a fall. Yet he's on a ward with dementia patients who constantly shout and cry, 24hrs a day, meters away from his bed. This makes me feel deeply uneasy when visiting, and for a poor frail old man whose confined to bed & can't leave it's utterly terrifying. He hasn't slept due to the noise, and consequently is getting more unwell and depressed.
A side from this his wellbeing is completely disregarded- there's no tv, no wifi, no window with a view, no human interaction beyond administering medical care. These are inadequate conditions for any human who is not in a vegetative state- which he is not.
He is stuck in bed with harsh strip lights which are on until 8pm and glaring down on him. He has no choice but to lie there with them on.
As a family, one or more of us has been in twice a day since he was admitted, but there's nowhere to sit with him & spend a little time: One seat or stand around the bed. We can't provide normality or social interaction, which is what he needs.
I would like to note that the ward appears very clean, and the nurses, when I've spoken to them seem friendly & Granddad has said that he's eaten well. Equally his medical care plan seems thorough... Whilst I'm desperately grateful for this these actions should not be viewed 'plus' points- this is basic care.
My Granddad went into that ward an elderly gent who'd been living in a semi independent setting but got poorly: he's now bed-bound, depressed and getting weaker by the day. It brakes my heart to say it, but I'm really concerned that he won't leave there alive.
"Depressing and upsetting"
