"My experience of being young and having a baby"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Maternity unit

(as the patient),

I had given birth to my daughter as a first time anxious mum. Ward staff where great until I moved to ward 7 and had the upset of meeting a member of staff who was horrible to me and made my and made my life hell when I had given birth.

When I first moved wards I asked the member of staff if they could help to feed my daughter, as I was not sure I was doing it properly.

The member of staff said no and that I may as well learn for myself and walked away.

The member of staff then commented some time later that younger woman shouldn't be allowed to have kids to which I cried.

Then my family had brought me flowers and chocolate when they visited to which I was eating when the member of staff asked how much I weighed and could see I was overweight, to which I said it was nothing to do with them.

The member of staff then said I shouldn't eat the chocolate, I was already big and hopefully my child wouldn't turn out big like me and walked away laughing saying poor baby a few times.

Totally ruined the experience of it for me and the member of staff made me doubt myself as a mum and a human being. Will never give birth at forth royal valley again, amazing how one person’s horrible treatment of me can ruin your whole experience just because I'm young.

Congratulations on the birth of your wee girl. I hope you are both well and settling in to a “routine” and enjoying getting to know each other!

I was sorry and saddened to read in your posting that you did not have a good experience in our unit. We expect staff to give care and support to ALL of our mums with compassion and respect and I am sorry to hear that this was not the case. Having a baby should be wonderful and exciting, one of the happiest times of your life!

I’d like to make sure that all staff learn from what you have shared about your experience. It would be helpful if you felt able to contact me (in confidence) and share additional information so that I can personally look in to your care. I can be contacted at gailbell@nhs.net.

Thank you for the positive comment about the other ward which I will also share.

Hopefully you will be happy to contact me and that I will hear from you soon.

With best wishes

Gail
