"A horrible experience at Royal Hallamshire"

About: Royal Hallamshire Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I was treated at the Royal Hallamshire in April I had an abscess removed and also a stent inserted into my kidney.

The doctors came round daily, they explained what was going on and explained twice if you didn't understand. But the staff always seemed shorthanded, so were rushing around. Apparently, with no time for the patients who were requesting pain killers.

Shockingly I watched a night nurse help herself to a patients biscuits while she was asleep. Also I had pressure sores even though I had been complaining for a week.

I suffer from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and have panic attacks, none of this was taken into account when i was admitted for operations in November and April. Postal appointments for outpatients was sent to me but turned out to be admission details! When I phoned no-one knew about it.

Medication that I needed 2 days before an appointment was not sent and caused so much pain, the operation had to be canceled.

As a prison officer I am aware of the need for security at the Hospital but I felt like a prisoner. The ward door was locked and I had to ask to leave and re-enter. It gave me feeling of loss of control.

All in all I had a most horrible experience and wish to never go through it again.
