"Petter Ward Day Surgery"

About: North Devon District Hospital

Thank you to all the staff for providing such an amazing standard of care during my three stays over the past six months. My quality of life has improved immensely since being referred into your care. In particular, the severe pain and discomfort I was burdened with went after the operation carried out by a specialist surgeon and all the care I received by staff at Petter Ward Day Surgery. I still cannot believe that I can now live normally without worrying about becoming anaemic, unable to work or just feeling really low.

I really appreciated the Surgeon and the Team explaining exactly what the procedure would involve, including all the risks. I was grateful for being copied into all relevant correspondence with my GP so that I was able to ask for clarifications when necessary. I also found it relatively easy to request copies of ultrasound images and scans to get a clearer pitcure of my health condition. All of the staff at Petter Ward, including pre-op assessment nurses and consultants showed a high level of compassion and care, which helped me to relax and feel confident about the treatment outcome. I am grateful to one of the nurses looking after me during my last stay for her sense of humour and for tea & biscuits after the operation.

Prior to seeing the specialist Surgeon, I underwent another operation by a different consultant at Petter Ward. This did not go quite according to plan (if there ever can be a clear one), because the procedure revealed that the true scale of my condition was not quite reflective of the ultrasound images. Whilst this delayed the surgery necessary to remove the problem, I am grateful to the consultant who was able to make an appropriate clinical decision not to operate and refer me to the specialist surgeon with expertise in severe and unusual cases like mine was.

Because of the nature of my health condition, I was able to not only see but also experience the differences in terms of the quality of care between different wards/units at NDDH, including Radiology, Phlebotomy and Petter Ward. Maybe it is due to the volume of patients, I did not find the Phlebotomy service standard of care equal to that received at Petter Ward or at my local GP practice. However, I would hesitate to make a general comment based on that single visit.

In general, my overall experience of the quality of care I received at Petter Ward is exceptional and I would definitely recommend the service to family and friends. I wish the whole Team a wonderful Christmas and a Happy and successful New Year!

Thank you so much for taking the time to outline the highlights of the care that you received and why you appreciated them. It is really useful for us to hear about what is important to you, especially the importance of good communication between teams and colleagues.

The team were delighted to receive such detailed feedback, particularly the ward team.

I hope you had a good Christmas break, although it seems very long ago now!

Kind regards

Katherine
