"Pleased with my care for elbow operation"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - City Campus / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I have had a lot of injuries over the years, the army is part of them a big part, but getting old with Arthritis does not help. I asked my doctor for a specialist more local and to my surprise, doctors do not have a hit list if needed! One of the PAs called me to say they have to "google". I laughed in surprise at this and told her I would do it myself. She did however think of one in Nottingham. I checked him and the hospital out on his website, blog etc and decided to give him ago, (it must be better than my experience of Lincoln).

This message is in favour of one specialist whom I would whole heartily recommend

I saw a Mr Manning and found the staff who were all very busy to be perfect in every way, polite fondly helpful and understanding. The first appointment was to see Mr Manning to see what he could do. This appointment was in early November at the pre assessment clinic on Lister ward 2. I was impressed again and found the staff there to be great, funny and extremely good at their work, a great start! I was impressed with his manner care and sense of humour, first class! He offered me a chance to get the elbow sorted and made an appointment for the operation in early December. This was done in the afternoon and I spent the night in I think Harvey ward they were also great and extremely busy but perfect I wish I could instigate a pay rise for them all!

Operation complete a big job which had me thinking (I was awake) and listening to the job being done as he discussed it with I think a trainee. I half expected to have Robo cops spare arm! I felt like a big job. It is far better than I expected and of course still hurts but time will tell BUT not as bad. Humour helps LOL

I also wish to recommend the Anesthetist. I am sorry I did not pick up his name.

My only complaint was 5 hours waiting for my clothing bag, it worried me but after a few complaints it turned up, including my glasses.

The other person whom I got to know well was Mr Manning's PA, Lucy, she was always ready to chat when I called and found time to listen on what was happening before and after, I even took in a bunch of flowers for her and sweets for the two departments that made themselves available for my time I the first appointment and the operation appointment. I was impressed and hope you let them know. Thanks

Thank you for taking the time to write in and share your experience, this was great to read. I’m sorry that you didn’t come out of your operation with Robocop’s spare arm – maybe in a few years we’ll have the technology! I’m very glad to hear that everything about your surgery went well, and that your elbow is already much improved. It will be my pleasure to pass your message of thanks on to Mr Manning and to Lucy.

My best wishes to you,

Dr Keith Girling

Divisional Director, Surgery
