"Poor attitudes"

About: County Hospital / Accident and emergency New Cross Hospital / Eye infirmary

(as the patient),

After a visit to my GP, I went to Stafford A & E. Lovely staff but they were unable to find the cause of the pain and told me to go to New Cross eye hospital if the pain didn't go. A couple of days later, as the pain was worse, I went to the eye hospital where the grumpy staff member told me I had to go to A & E which I did. A patronising staff member treated me like a childish time waster, although the nurse specialist was okay. She also couldn't find the cause although she told me my eye was badly scratched and made a referral for the eye clinic for 2 days later. Another rude member of staff, before seeing a doctor who never said a word to me except to tell me to sit down then following another eye examination, said to wait to see the consultant.

I then saw the consultant for yet another examination only to be told to keep putting in the cream and no, I couldn't have another appointment, if it didn't get better I would have to go back to A and E! ! !

A week later I went back to Stafford A & E where I had yet another eye examination, still no diagnosis and advised to go back to the eye hospital, which I naturally was reluctant to do.

By Tuesday this week I was in such pain and was in such a state that my husband insisted that he take me back to New Cross. I saw yet another patronising staff member who refused to let my husband accompany me I to the exam room, despite my obvious need for him to be with me. They said that the room was too small, but it was plenty big enough and even had a spare chair!

I then saw a wonderful eye nurse specialist who treated me like a human being. She examined my eye then flicked my eyelid back and low and behold, found a sharp eyelash growing from under my eyelid into my eye. A pair of tweezers and she gave me my life back. I had a month of absolute hell, in constant severe pain, unable to read, watch television, drive, shop or cook. I suggest you send your doctors on a refresher course and the rest of your staff on a charm course (except for eye nurse specialist who deserves a medal! ).
