"We’re confined to our houses so a trip is something different."

About: Stronach Day Service

(as a service user),

The day centre is very good, it’s the staff who make it good, it’s entirely up to them. Sometimes there are not enough staff and they have to borrow from the mainland.

The old day centre building was much more homely than the new, it was a much smaller area.

I really enjoy going out in the bus in the afternoons. My favourite trip is going on the forestry roads, you get away from everything and see parts of the island you don’t normally see. We’re confined to our houses so a trip is something different.

One thing that could improve is that the door of the new bus is too wide to get on safely – you can’t hold on to both sides. The old bus is better.

Response from Isobel McKenna, Team Manager, North Ayrshire Council

Dear Lamlashman,

Arran is a beatiful island with fantastic scenery and nice to hear you are able to get out and about to appreciate it.

Unfortunately when island based staff are not available to work in Stronach Day Service, the service has to rely upon mainland staff. A recruitment drive is being organised for additional staff in the Day Service, the advert will be put on My Job Scotland and the Arran Banner. Once the new worker/s are identified hopefully reduce the need to ask for support.

Hopefully you can adjust to the new surroundings as it takes a bit of getting used to with the high ceilings and larger living space. I have raised your point with the team and in the coming months will be working with the service users looking at ways to make the enviroment feels more homely.

I will discuss the wide doorway on the minibus with the Transport Manager to make him aware of the problem and to see if a solution can be found.
