"Unacceptable"

About: University Hospital Lewisham

I am 11 weeks pregnant and I went to the Lewisham hospital for the first scan. In the appointment letter they suggested me to start to drink water an hour before the appointment. The day of the appointment I was there at 10.20 (my appointment was at 10.30) but I was left waiting until 11.30 and you can imagine how difficult has been not to use the toilet, especially since I have a problems with my kidney.

When I asked explaination on why there was a delayed the nurse and the people at the reception were extremely rude. The toilet in the department was out of service (in a place with two hundred pregnant people). In the other bathroom both sinks were broken, the window was broken, the flush was not working and the bathroom was disgusting. I think this level of rudeness and lack of hygiene so beyond acceptable.

Thank you for your feedback. I am disappointed to hear of your experiences at University Hospital Lewisham. The Women's Health Centre is currently having a refurbishment which involves updating all rooms, toilets and the waiting area. The work is due to be completed by Christmas. We currently have three toilets available for women and I am sorry that the toilet was not up to the standards I would expect in the department.

I will be meeting with the reception team and staff to discuss your complaint so that this does not happen again. Once again, I am very sorry for your experience but thank you for taking the time to write in. Feedback gives us an opportunity to make improvements to our services. If you would like the opportunity to discuss what happened in more detail or offer any further feedback then please do contact me on giuseppe.labriola@nhs.net or 0208 333 3101.

Giuseppe Labriola Deputy Head of Midwifery
