"Poor care"

About: Darent Valley Hospital

I gave birth in the birthing centre last month with my second child. I perversely had an epidural and wanted another due to the delivery suite being full this was not possible. I asked for a water birth due to it being used I was not allowed to use it. How can a birthing centre have one birthing pool. So I ended up giving birth in what I can only describe as a tiny examining room with a tiny chair/half bed thing it was awful.the midwives where rushed off there feet my midwife exsamened me on arrive then just sat on a chair writing notes. then disappeared when we needed them. They then asked if I could do a urine sample so I stood up and the baby was almost out. Very poor midwifery.

As the Head of Midwifery I was disappointed to read your comments regarding the care you received whilst on the Birth Centre during November 2015. It appears from your feedback that this was not your original chosen place of birth and that you came to the Centre due to the Delivery Suite being busy. Though, I would have still hoped that your birth experience would have been a positive one.

We do have 2 birthing pools on the Birth Centre so assume that both rooms were in use when you came to us. The room you describe is one of the other delivery rooms which has been equipped for women to remain as mobile as possible during labour. I would very much like the opportunity to discuss your experience with you further, if you would like too? Due to this feedback being left anonymously please would you be kind enough to contact me via the Maternity Department.

Thank you

Deborah McAllion Head of Midwifery/Supervisor of Midwives
