"Concerned about Aceptic Non Touch Technique not..."

About: Wythenshawe Hospital

I was admitted to ward F16 post operatively on 25/11/15. I ended up having to stay in overnight due to pain and slow post general anaesthetic recovery. Day staff on the ward were lovely, who helped me get comfortable numerous times. During the night, however, I was in a lot of pain and unable to sleep, so I required more medications. IV Paracetamol was administered to me, by a nurse in white uniform. This concerned me quite considerably. The nurse did not wear any gloves, did not clean my cannula, did not flush my line before or after. I was absolutely appalled by this that I was desperate to leave the following morning. I don't think I actually felt well enough to go home, as I have unfortunately developed some post op complications i.e. infection requiring antibiotics. Surely ANTT is the basics of nursing, why then was it not applied to the administration of my IV's?

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments on the NHS Choices website and please accept our apologies for the delay in responding to you.

Please accept our apologies that your pain relief experience during the night shift on F16 was less than satisfactory and please be assured that your comments will be passed to the appropriate Service Managers and Matron for the department who will share and investigate with the relevant staff.

We are pleased to note that your experience and care received from the day staff was satisfactory and this too will be passed to the Manager.

Please don’t hesitate to contact the Patient Experience Department on 0161 291 5600 or via email at pls@uhsm.nhs.uk if we can be of any assistance in the future.

Kind regards
