I was taken into a&e with severe back pain. I was taken to shuttleworth ward. After a few days I developed a sore throat which affected my ears to. I asked to see a doctor on several occasions but no one ever came. I couldn't swallow water by this time without it feeling like I was trying to swallow a huge bolder. All I wanted was a doctor to tell me if I had an infection or not. A family friend who was visiting even went and asked fir a doctor to see me as I was in severe pain. No doctor came. Instead I was transferred to welton ward. On the first nights stay on this ward I fell out of bed(which I now see as a blessing in disguise). A doctor told me he thought I I had tonsillitis. I also had a chest x-ray and was told I had pneumonia. This came as a shock. I originally came in with severe back pain. I am convinced I picked up both tonsillitis and pneumonia on shuttleworth ward. Treatment was started for both illnesses, and I was put in a side room against my wishes as I dont like being alone. I suffer with depression. But I was told I was a danger to other patients because of the pneumonia so was made to go into a side room. I remember being told 'you don't want to be responsible for some old person catching it. ' How can I be held responsible. Not accepting that. Wasn't happy but couldn't voice my opinion because I could hardly speak. I was promised that there'd be plenty of nursing staff that would be in and around my room. But most of the time I was left on my own. With a very low mood. While I was in this side room a nurse who was assigned to me who was in charge of my medications forgot my morning cd drug. Even though they were reminded I hadn't been given it. I was left feeling dizzy, lights headed, sick, aching all over and stomach pains. It was when I got the stomach pains I clicked and remembered the nurse hadn't given me my cd. I pressed the buzzer to call someone and told them I hadn't had my cd that morning. They found my nurse who did offer an apology but to me that's not enough. They've been given a position that involves a high level of responsibility, I don't think that should have happened.
There were a couple of occasions when id asked for pain relief and I'm not sure if the person I told didn't deliver the message or it was just my nurse that had forgotten again. One of these people I told I needed pain relief turned round and told me I would have to wait until dinner was over. 2 and a half hours later I was in tears as the pain was so bad, my nurse was passing my room and asked what was wrong. I told them id asked for pain relief more than 2 hours ago. They said they knew nothing about it. I'm not sure again whether they were told. I feel that too many mistakes were made. Mistakes that I don't think shouldn have happened.
