"Felt as if for a short time we had our mum back"

The service was provided by Avril from Dementia Support. It involved a weekly two hour outing on a Friday to the shops and cafes. It allowed my mum to meet other people and feel part of society as she had become isolated and withdrawn. She looked forward to this outing every week and talked about it in great detail and we felt as if for a short time we had our mum back.

Having continuity with Avril enabled my mum to speak to someone else outside of family, who was patient and good company for her.

Our only wish would be if it could continue even if you have to pay for this service as it would be money well spent for our peace of mind and our mum's happiness and well being.

Dear DemSS,

Many thanks for taking the time to get in touch with us regarding your experiences of our Dementia Support Services and on the positive impact that the service has clearly had.

The service was set up as a crisis response team that had originally only two members of staff in the team. We changed that quite quickly to have a team of eight carers who now cover the whole of North Ayrshire including the Isle of Arran.

As part of a review of the service we are now looking at the service being extended and considerations are being made to try and address the medium term needs of those we support as well as short term interventions and we will consult fully with those who have used the service as we plan its future shape.
