"The staff were most helpful, almost ..."

About: Scunthorpe General Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

The staff were most helpful, almost to a fault.

They were extremely eager to please.

What could be improved

There could have been more signs to allow us to find Pathology and to find our way out again.

The staff would not have to spend time directing patients and visitors if this was done.

The Pathology department had blood on the chairs where blood was taken, old dried blood on the carpet in the waiting area and a pool of dried blood just outside the lift doors on the A floor. Cleanliness needs improving. It's a hospital, not a butchers shop.

The car park pay station just outside the A&E is in very dangerous place. If you are using the machine to check out you need to walk to the car park. This involves walking along the access road to where the wall alongside the car park ends. The access road has no pavement and the ambulances, staff buses and motorists use this narrow access road. They bully their way through expecting slow walkers to jump out of the way.

The pay machine needs to be at the exit from the car park and the exit gate machine needs to be moved to where motorists can reach it without getting out of their vehicles.

The person who decided where the pay machine was to be sited obviously did not use that car park.

Anything else?

All the books had been taken out of the waiting area in Pathology due to swine flu risks, yet whilst waiting to enter the car park I noticed that most staff leaving the hospital to go home were still wearing their uniforms. Is infection transfer only an issue if it is a current trendy topic?
