"Let down by low staffing levels"

About: Pinderfields General Hospital

I had my baby girl in Pinderfields on 30th August this year, I was induced and told to come in on the 28th at 3pm. When I arrived I was put in a private room after staff saying they had no room for me, I was then sat waiting for 4 hours for someone to come in and get things started. The time I was in aside from waiting around was fine and staff couldn't do enough.

The staff on the labour ward were amazing and stayed with us through the duration of my labour and although there were issues with my baby's heart rate they kept reassuring us and ensuring we were not stressed throughout, in the end we had a team of people come in to help deliver my baby and for me to be stitched up afterwards, al staff were fantastic including the registrar and most staff involved in my labour came to see myself and my baby before finishing their shift. After having my baby we had to stay in another 24 hours as my baby had to have blood sugars monitored the nurse doing this was quite rude and very dismissive of any concerns we had, as was another midwife who, while very pleasant, told us our baby was feeding fine and wrote in my records they had examined me when they hadn't. After 24 hours I asked if I was ok to be discharged, if now been in hospital 4 days and just wanted to go home and was told by the same member of staff who had wrote in my records that they had examined me when they hadn't that they would discharge me if they could before they left, this was at 8pm and my partner was sat waiting for 2 hours to take me home only to find that the nurse had finished their shift and not informed us. I was then seen by another midwife who completely changed my experience of ward 18. The midwife noticed my baby wasn't feeding right and wasn't happy to discharge me till she was, the midwife helped me feed my baby all through the night and even stayed on to discharge me the next morning. The midwife couldn't have done enough for us and I am so grateful that they picked up on our feeding concerns as everyone else had dismissed them when we asked. My overall care was great but the staff are let down by being so busy and so stretched, after being discharged I did call the ward for some advice when I got home and was made to feel a bit stupid over the phone. I'd probably recommend Pinderfields but only if you are willing to question decisions and ask for second opinions. If I'd not of asked to be discharged so many times I'd probably still be waiting now.

We would be pleased to arrange for this episode of care to be investigated if the patient would like to contact us directly.
