"Closure of RVS trolley and newspaper service New Victoria Hospital Glasgow"

About: New Victoria Hospital (Glasgow)

(as a volunteer/advocate),

GGCNHS closed down a service provided by RVS with one day notice. This removed a service well used by both patients and staff for the last 2 and a half years. Three weeks later no explanation has been given despite numerous complaints by staff, patients and volunteers. The newspapers, magazines and confectionery products sold by the service did not compete with those provided by the cafe within the hospital.

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

Dear Southsider,

I just wanted to acknowledge your post as I know that you are not alone in raising the issue around the removal of this service.

I have spoken with the site facilities manager for the New Victoria and I know that this is being looked into. I will come back to you as soon as possible with any more information that becomes available. In the meantime, I just wanted to let you know that I have seen your post and highlighted it to the appropriate colleagues.

Best Wishes,

Lorna

Thank you for raising the issues and your concerns about the RVS trolley service for patients and visitors to the New Victoria Hospital.

We are keen to ensure this service continues and the volunteers are able to provide patients and visitors – and our staff – with this valued facility.

When this service was first agreed with the RVS, it was to be a mobile trolley service that could be taken directly into the wards and other areas of the hospital. What has since happened, is that this was instead being provided from a unit which stayed in the main atrium area of the hospital. This has posed some issues around Health and Safety regulations which we need to be mindful of.

Since you posted, our facilities staff have talked to officials from the RVS about these issues and it has been agreed that the current service would re-open yesterday (7th December) for a temporary period of three months. This will let us have ongoing discussions and inspections by NHS and RVS Health and Safety officers.

It is the shared wish of NHSGGC and the RVS to come to a more permanent arrangement that will see a full trolley service in operation following this three month period, which would enable the trolley to operate from the main atrium and also enable the service to be taken directly into wards and other areas of the hospital.

I hope you find this response, and our assurance of continued working with the RVS to resolve outstanding safety issues, satisfactory however if there is anything else you would like to add then please do not hesitate to get in touch with us directly, through my colleague Lorna on Lorna.Gray@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

Best Wishes,

Karen Connelly,

Site Facilities Manager,

New Victoria Hospital

Update posted by Southsider (a volunteer/advocate)

It would be interesting to know what HB thought the " outstanding safety issues" were and why they merited such precipitate action? However, the reinstatement of the service is to be welcomed and hopefully a long term solution will be agreed which reflects the needs of patients and staff.
