"The gem of the NHS........"

About: Queen Victoria Hospital (East Grinstead)

I was rushed over to the QV Hospital East Grinstead, last year, after spending a year on antibiotics for an infection that was caused by medication and a very bad Dentist in Medway. I was being sent around in circles from the Dentist to the Dr to Medway maritime Hospital. This kept going on with no one wanting to help me even though my airway was slowly closing up and the infection was just getting worse. Only after near on a year, an out of hours Dr refused to leave me for over 2 and half hrs, telling Medway Maritime Hospital, that they weren't leaving me until they agreed to have me transfered to the QV Hospital. After a long battle, the Dr thankfully got their way, which in turn no doubt saved my life. This was my 1st visit to the QV and shocked to say the least. I was admitted straight away, after seeing the Dr who was on duty that day

I was very ill and was put on intravenous antibiotics immediately. I was informed at every stage of my treatment.I am terrified of general anthestic which could have caused problems yet Dr and the staff were very caring and understanding all the way. All the staff are very professional, caring and very informative and also listen and try to accommodate the patients needs. I underwent emergency surgery and was looked after by the most wonderful and caring staff I've ever met.The Dr and nurses were checking on me at all times and reassured me when needed. I really cannot fault the Dr's and in fact any of the staff at this wonderful hospital because it really is the Gem in the NHS. It is so clean and bright and in fact some would believe they were in a private Hospital it really is that lovely. Not only did the Dr and nurses save my life but they showed me what the NHS should be like. It really is a wonderful Hospital with very dedicated Dr's and nurse's whom are also very caring, patient, they listen, talk you through every step and just totally make you feel safe in their care. If the QV Hospital can be so wonderful then it just proves that so many other NHS Hospital can be as good, big or small but they obviously need to be shown how by the wonderful QV Hospital East Grinstead. The QV really does feel like you're in a private Hospital, they respect your privacy; realise that every patient has different needs and I even had the Hospital psychologist come and visit me before my emergency operation due to the fact I'm terrified of having a general anthestic along with the very lovely anthesestist just to help me overcome my fear and due to my poor health they even told me that I had a bed waiting in ICU if it was needed but due to the skill of the Dr's thankfully I returned onto the small, very clean ward and bed that I was first admitted too.It was just a small ward with very comfortable bed's with 8 bed's in if I remember correctly yet it feels very spacious and light yet still very private.

Dear Smurf

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and post your comment. It was so pleasing to read of the care and treatment you received upon being transferred to us for emergency surgery.

As you point out, the care and compassion shown to you by the doctors, nurses and therapists are the kinds of actions that make us particularly proud. QVH is indeed a truly very special place and of course most of this is due to our outstanding staff.

Please be assured that this posting has been shared with staff who I am sure will appreciate, as well as be encouraged by, the time and trouble you took in writing your kind remarks.

Once again thank you for taking the time to comment. We sincerely appreciate your thoughtfulness and wish you all the very best with your continued recovery.

Kind regards,

Nicolle Ferguson, Patient Experience Manager
