About: Southend Hospital

(as the patient),

What could be improved

After care and Administration.

My wife has attended this clinic 3 times since being diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism May 2009

The experience has been problematic, with a lack of understanding, care and follow up.

After being admitted in May for, what was thought to be a heart condition, Hyperthyroidism was diagnosed. We had to constantly phone for a follow up appointment. Treatment was maintained at too high dose for too long, then reduced too low. The attending physician lacked in key patient skills, giving the impression we were not important, or intelligent enough to understand.

We asked to be seen by the Consultant in follow up, but this has been disappointing. Again we believe the consultant lacks any really interest in our case. At the last consultation 16th November my wife explained she was concerned about problems with her eyes. The Consultant said they could advise some topical treatment ( ointment) and would write to our GP. Despite several calls and a visit to the GP that has not been sent. I phoned the Unit secretary on Friday 27th and they advised the letter had been prepared, but not sent!

Meanwhile, our GP has said they believe she has Graves Disease, a complication sometimes seen and has requested an Eye examination. The Doctor has attempted to get feedback from the Endocrine clinic, to no avail.

We understand Hyperthyroidism is a little researched area of the Endocrine system, but this does not excuse the lack of care we have received.

Anything else?

Generally, our experience of Southend Hospital is positive. The treatment my wife received in the Sita Lumsden ward (May) and the follow up from the Cardiac Unit has been exemplary.

I wish the same could be said of Endocrinology!
