"Poor medical Practice"

About: Colchester General Hospital

After arriving at the hospitals minors with severe back pain, I was warned by the nurse who initially examined me that I would be disappointed with what the doctors were going to be able to do for me. After getting to see a doctor after a 3 hour wait, they sat me on a bed. Another doctor came in saying they needed the bed for another patient and the doctor dealing with me rushed me off the bed and into another cubicle. They then asked for a brief overview of what was wrong and sent me for an x-ray in a wheelchair. The nurse at the radiography department was appalled that I had been sent in a chair and not on a gurney. The x-ray staff were more than friendly and made my experience slightly less horrific. When I returned to the doctor they had a prescription written with tramadol and diazepam. Even though I had explained I cannot take tramadol. So they scribbled it out. They also said I was going to need steroids but never wrote it down on the prescription. It was not until I got to the pharmacy that I realised the biggest mistake. They had prescribed me 40mg of diazepam to be taken once daily for 7 days. That amount could be dangerously high for some people. All it would have taken was one careless pharmacist as careless as that doctor to hand that amount of medication to someone. I am absolutely appalled at the service I received on this event and as my first experience in the NHS system in the UK, I can honestly say I am petrified to return. I am off work for a week and still none the wiser after my experience. I felt like I wasn't cared for and that doctor had better things to be doing that day.
