"Door to any future diagnosis has been slammed in our face"

About: Sheffield Children's Hospital / Neurosurgery

(as a relative),

My son is hyper-mobile. He has had multiple problems and chronic pain all of his life. We have been visiting Sheffield Children’s Hospital for a neuro-surgical consultant. After waiting 6 months for MRI scan results, I complained to my son’s rheumatologist. She wrote to the hospital and I received the results. However, since then my son has not been referred to a specialist clinic. In my opinion, the door to any future diagnosis has been slammed in our face. I have been given no explanation at all.

I support the organisation in making sure that the voice of patients and the public is heard and used in planning services. This involves running events, managing surveys, and building networks with the local community.

I am sorry to hear that your experience of accessing local NHS services has not been to the standard that you expect, unfortunately I am unable to comment on individual clinical cases. I can however advise that if you are not happy with the outcome of this first opinion, you are entitled to obtain a second opinion, you could discuss this with your local GP.

If you feel that you currently have unanswered questions around the care your son has been given, you can also contact the PALS service at Sheffield Children’s Hospital for further support. The PALS team are available during the day Monday to Friday, and are based in the main entrance at the Children's Hospital. The main contact is Linda Towers on (0114) 2717594. Email: linda.towers@sch.nhs.uk.
