I was the victim of a road traffic accident and taken to Kingston Hospital. Once there I was treated in A&E and the standard of care over the four hours was excellent.
From there I was moved to a ward where I felt things got a bit more mixed. Some of the nurses were absolutely excellent, some left a lot to be desired. The doctors were a bit the same.
The input from the consultant amounted to about 45 seconds in the course of the week over two visits during the second one of which I was told that because I couldn't be treated due to the complexity of my injury, I would just have to wait for one who could take me on. I was told that it was the system and there was nothing they could do about it.
They may not have been able to do anything about it but I did. I called the new consultant's secretary, told her the story and she arranged my transfer to his care within 24 hours where things progressed. I had long and complex surgery in another hospital and who knows, I may even be able to walk again in another couple of months!
I have a feeling that if I hadn't known what to do, I could have still been lying there waiting for a consultant to do something.
The second consultant and hospital (St George's in Tooting) were a complete contrast of excellent, dedicated staff. I could not praise them enough.
