My relative recently had a heart by-pass at the Chesterman Unit in Sheffield. The surgical treatment was superb and I felt 95% of the nursing staff were extremely efficient and caring. However, I found a minority of older nurses did appear to be somewhat jaded and in my opinion were doing the minimum amount of work required.
On transfer to Mount Vernon Hospital in Barnsley, I feel I can describe only about 80% of staff as caring and genuinely interested in patient well-being. It seemed to me a very high proportion only carried out the minimum amount of work they could get away with. My suggestion is that all NHS nursing staff should be switched between managers and jobs at regular intervals to prevent such events taking place.
