"Endocrinology Department"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital

After suffering with extreme tiredness for several months my GP eventually diagnosed that I had developed hyperparathyroidism & in July I was referred to the endocrinology department at the hospital. In September I was seen in nuclear medicine. This treatment involved a nuclear scan which is not particular pleasant as you are enclosed in the scanner for three sessions & it can be very scary if you are claustrophobic like me. The staff in the department were very caring & explained the whole procedure & were reassuring all the time as the scan takes about 3 hours including the breaks between each one. My second visit at the beginning of November was for a CT scan which was much better. The machine did not surround you so much & the scan only lasted about 20 minutes. Again the staff explained everything & made sure that I was comfortable with the treatment. Despite being a very busy department they still had time to ensure that I was OK before being allowed to leave. My third visit was last week to see the endocrinologist to discuss the treatment for my condition. I was seen on time & the doctor was excellent. They explained everything to me including the condition, its symptoms, the options available and numerous questions about my health & wellbeing generally. I came away feeling reassured about the outcome & following more tests the eventual surgery.

In my opinion despite all we hear about the hospital I feel that the staff are coping as best as they can under a great deal of pressure, especially in some departments such as A & E. I am lucky to enjoy good health so rarely visit the hospital but my experience on this occasion was very good.

Thank you.
