"Bad experience of Harlow EPU"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I attended Harlow EPU end of October last year (2014) due to slight bleeding and pain in early pregnancy. I was seen by a midwife who was not at all interested or seemed to care, then waited for a scan to be told by the nice lady that there was no heart beat.

Devastated and upset, I was allowed to stay behind a curtain until a midwife was free as I was so upset. To be called into my appointment and asked why I was crying and that I could of got my dates wrong which I didn't. The midwife seemed very unprofessional and not caring at the slightest.

I had to then go back a further 3 times before anyone would help me or make a decision. I attended a&e in the early hours in agony due to my miscarriage to be told to attend EPU in the morning, which I did and then the doctor tried to then make me wait a further few days for yet again another scan. I demanded a scan the same day which I got and then the decision was finally made that I had actually miscarried.

I am appalled and disgusted at the way I was treated I have not returned for any reason. Until now where I will be attending Monday morning back at EPU so let's see if I get a scan the same day and I am treated kindly this time.

Dear Anonymous,

I hope you did get better treatment on the subsequent occasions on which you attended EPU, clearly the events you describe are ones no-one would want to experience, the lack of care and interest you describe are not how we expect our staff to behave.

I am aware that Jacqui Featherstone, the Associate Director of Nursing for Family and Women's Healthcare has asked to make contact with you and so it would greatly appreciated if you could call me, Shahid Sardar on 01279 827084 and we can connect you with our clinical leads for women's services immediately to better understand what has happened and resolve these issues.
