My partner was brought into to A&E Saturday after several days of increasing pain and being bed ridden from a broken tibia. We had been assessed over the phone by a doctor who recommended we go to hospital and get his leg checked. Despite being on tramadol and paracetamol he could barely sit up and almost passed out when he stood up. We were seen in the minor injury?/urgent care?
The doctor seems fairly unconcerned but I explained that the paramedics had given him two doses of morphine on top of his painkillers just to get him out the house and in the ambulance. When they saw how much agony my partner was in as they prodded his leg and agreed to cut off the temporary cast
After being given more morphine a nurse roughly cut open the front of the cast. The doctor said they thought the cast was causing pain as it has been plastered up to the front of the shin and was pushing on the break. This nurse then proceeded to dig in-between the cast and the broken part of the leg causing my partner agony, they then declared there was nothing wrong with the cast. I explained again it was causing immense pain and he couldn't move at home and I was concerned he wouldn't make his fracture appointment on Monday. At this point my partner had three doses of morphine and was in agony as they pressed the break in his leg. This nurse then told me he needed to "man up and get himself back in to the fracture clinic on Monday". At this point I actually started crying, my poor partner had to endure agony to be told that we had no reason to be there and he needed to "man up". He wasn't shown any dignity, respect or compassion.
They showed no concern that he had been bed ridden for four days.
Luckily the doctor said they wanted the whole cast off and replace it. They then yanked him about as they broke the cast off him. Not at any point did either the doctor or this nurse talk to my partner, assure him, smile, tell him he was doing well. Nothing. Not one word.
When I went out and tried to question the staff I got the most ridiculous attitude from them both. They were blunt and unfriendly. I was trying to get them to explain and elaborate on what they were telling me and I had shirty looks thrown at me. I was told I needed to sort his pain relief out. They didn't explain how until I questioned them. They told me again he wasn't an emergency and completely brushed me off.
As if that wasn't traumatic enough when it came to applying the new plaster, the doctor grabbed my partner's foot around the toes and held his entire leg unsupported in the air as the lady applied at plaster. My partner was nearly passing out with pain, and he could barely breathe. Not one word was said to him! Not one. It was barbaric. His previous plaster and the one since was not applied this way.
And after being told there was nothing wrong? The very next day my partner got himself to the toilet five times, shaved and washed almost completely unaided
