"Gastroscopy Elmstead"

About: Colchester General Hospital

I attended Elmstead day unit for a Gastroscopy which was arranged urgently by my Gp. It was apparently arranged under the 2 week cancer target which i knew nothing about. I had gone to my Gp with the thinking that I had H pylori again as I had had this in the past and knew the symptoms. The treatment by the nursing staff was absolutely second to none. They were brilliant. However, the treatment by the consultant was dire. Prior to even starting the investigation their words to me were, in an abrupt manner, "Its not cancer". What I should have said at that point was I didnt think it was, my gp was concerned not I and I should have asked for them to write that down. The consultant's X ray vision was amazing. Needless to say I remained quiet all through the procedure not even gagging when the tube went down. The doctor barely spoke to me all through the procedure. I felt humiliated. I got up to go and i asked if there was anything else that could be causing my symptoms and was told that I would have to go back to my gp for furthur advice, which was not a problem but they couldn't even look up from their desk whilst talking to me. In fact despite being only @ 6 ft away they were relaying this through the nurse who I have to say appeared embarassed. Not as much as I was. I couldn't wait to get out of there. I think the whole procedure lasted @ 15 minutes. Longest 15 minutes of my life. What makes it worse is that I am a collegue. I must reiterate the most excellent treatment from all the nursing and reception staff. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I am sorry that you had such a poor experience. Our Medical Director Dr Angela Tillett has asked me to contact you because she is extremely concerned by what you've said about your consultant's attitude.

Therefore, I'd be grateful if you could email me at mark.prentice@colchesterhospital.nhs.uk with your name, date of birth, address and a daytime phone number, plus the words "Gastroscopy Elmstead", so that Dr Tillett can investigate.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Mark Prentice, Head of External Relations, Colchester Hospital Trust
