"frightening A&E experience"

About: University Hospital Lewisham

I am 6 weeks pregnant and encountering early complications. Upon arriving at Lewisham A&E department, I queued for 45 minutes to check in before anybody knew I was here.

I went to the toilet to provide a urine sample and was horrified. The stench was beyond anything I have ever experienced and it was in such a mess! There was no toilet paper, no paper towels, no hand soap or sanitiser. I then tried 5 different hand sanitiser units in A&E department and close by - all were completely empty.

All being well, I'll be giving birth at Lewisham and the distinct lack in care for basic hygiene really concerns me.

In more positive news, all of the doctors and nurses o have seen so far have been very pleasant.

Thank you for your comments, we are sorry to hear that you experienced some delays, unfortunately we saw an unprecedented amount of patients over the last few days and this did have an impact. However thank you for your positive comments about the nursing and medical staff.

The concerns you have raised over the toilet have been raised to our domestic supervisors and all areas are cleaned and checked regularly. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you wish to discuss further
