"Special care by caring specialists"

About: East Surrey Hospital

In the following, some will no doubt accuse me of bias given my daughter is a Consultant on the Acute Medicine Unit at East Surrey, nonetheless I will try to be dispassionate and accurate on behalf of my wife who was the patient.

My 78 year old wife had a fall at home on 8th October 2015 resulting in a painful fracture of the hip. She was taken by emergency ambulance to East Surrey and from the moment of the arrival of the ambulance crew through to her Emergency admission at 12:30 pm and subsequent treatment she was shown the utmost kindness and consideration by the various departments.

It is at times like this that one needs a National Health Service to be there for you and I was an observer to state that all patients I saw received equally first rate treatment but above all consideration, kindness and care of the individual.

She was admitted to Newdigate Ward who could not have done more for pain relief and ministering to her needs and those of her fellow patients. Perhaps what struck me particularly was the same care and consideration awarded to the poor souls suffering from dementia on top of their obvious pain where patience rather than patients is a truism.

My Wife's surgeon took the trouble to explain all the options available and the various specialists consulted her at regular intervals to check she agreed to the different treatments being promoted to check that she understood what was to happen.

One could not heap praise on any specific team member - all were fantastic

My own daughter's department (AMU) were also involved and one could not fault their dedication and willingness to help but I must repeat that my observation was that equal treatment applied to all patients and not just because I was related to a staff member.
