"Emergency urology treatment"

About: Hexham General Hospital

On Tuesday 27th October at approximately 10.30pm I found myself unable to pass water.

My wife phoned the 111 service, and was advised we could have a non emergency ambulance to take me to Cramlington Hospital.

I spoke myself to a nurse who advised they would get a Doctor to call me back.

This was in spite of me being in extreme pain.

I believed that Hexham Hospital was closed to emergency cases, therefore I phoned Haltwhistle Hospital.

A Very helpful nurse said they would phone Hexham Hospital for me and ring me back.

They phoned back 5 minutes later and said if I could get to Hexham you would assist me.

Despite extreme pain I drove myself to Hexham, and was seen almost immediately.

A catheter was fitted, urine and blood samples taken and I was allowed to go home at 0145am.

The treatment I received was first class - highly recommended.

Also I attended again on Tuesday 3rd November because of pain with the catheter.

This was removed and I am able now to pass urine without trouble.

Again the service and treatment by all members of staff was first class.

Hexham is a wonderful hospital, it is such a shame that A&E services have been removed to an outpost such as Cramlington, where I would have been unable to attend due to pain, and if I had gone in a "non-emergency" ambulance as the 111 service advised, would have been in even more pain waiting to be seen!

Definitely 10/10 for Hexham General Hospital!

Dear Sammy

Thank you for your kind words about the care provided at Hexham, I will make sure the staff are made aware.

I would like to clarify the emergency care provision which I think you’ll find helpful.

As you will know, in June this year we changed our model of emergency care with the opening of our new Northumbria hospital in Cramlington. All serious and life threatening emergencies are now being cared for here.

Our three general hospitals, including Hexham General Hospital, have urgent care centres which offer a 24 hour walk-in service for less serious conditions. Haltwhistle War Memorial Hospital, along with other community hospitals, provides a minor injuries service.

Without knowing the conversation that took place, it’s difficult to comment on the advice you were given when you called 111 to wait for a non-emergency ambulance or why you weren’t directed to Hexham. I am pleased that you received advice from our nurse at Haltwhistle and treated promptly at Hexham in our urgent care centre.

It sounds as though you received treatment in the most appropriate place for your condition. I’m very pleased to hear that you have now recovered.

Kind regards

Claire Riley
