About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Children's Ward

(as a parent/guardian),

Our son has global delay and epilepsy. We are regulars with paediatrics now and have been to the children's ward a few times this year, most recently this week. I'm so grateful for everyone's help and the staff being friendly, from the doctors and nurses to catering and cleaning staff. It makes such a difference when you're feeling anxious and worrying about the most important people in your life. You really need friendly faces.

I can't fault the care we've received. My son was moved to a room when he found it difficult to sleep with the noises around him and for that I'm also very grateful. He's non verbal and has sensory issues and it's impossible to explain to a 4 year old with learning difficulties what is happening.

I'm sure there is nothing that can be done, as it's not a children's hospital, but my only real concern when we have to stay overnight is the beds. He is too big for a cot and he has no sense of danger or spacial awareness. So in a bed, although there are sides, if he wakes up he stands up and could easily fall. We overcame this by him sleeping on the fold out bed and my other half sleeping in the hospital bed. The joys of having a disabled child - there is never quite the right fit facilities anywhere unfortunately.

Thanks so much for your hard work. Hopefully we won't see you all again too soon!

Many thanks for your feedback. It is good to know that your wee boy is now better and back in his own safe, familiar environment.

It is great to hear that the staff have helped make a very frightening and anxious time a bit easier for all of you. As a mum your wee boy is the most important person in the world and you only want the best for him.

The team always try to make our children's experience the best it can be as they are all so vulnerable.

With regards the bed. I have spoken to staff and they will look in to options. We were thinking that perhaps the fold out bed may be the best option should a stay in the ward be required again. Perhaps you could add information to your sons’ hospital passport so that on any future admissions your preferred sleeping option will be discussed with the staff.

I will ensure your feedback is shared with all of the team.

With best wishes to you and your family.

Gail
