"Generic appointment letters"

About: Bassetlaw Hospital / Urology

(as a parent/guardian),

My adult special needs stepdaughter who has severe learning difficulties received a frankly hilarious appointment letter this morning.

She has tuberous sclerosis and this condition means she could potentially have kidney problems now she is an adult. To keep an eye on things, she has to undergo kidney scans every 2 or 3 years.

Her appointment letter helpfully says 'Please drink 1. 5 pints of water 1 hour before your appointment in order to fill your bladder. Do not pass water in the meantime as it is essential you arrive with a full bladder. Please be aware if your bladder is not full when you attend we may have to rebook your scan on another day. '

All that works fine for someone who hasn't got severe learning difficulties, doesn't mind drinking water and doesn't wear continence pads because they can't concentrate enough to have bladder control. Where is the patient centered care? Why do NHS IT systems not automatically flag up learning difficulties and treat the patients appropriately?

We have an icicle's chance in hell of getting her to drink 1. 5 pints of water and her full bladder will only happen by accident so no doubt we will see what happens on the day.

Hi - Thanks for your feedback regarding your step daughters scan appointment. Unfortunately, it does look like the department havent been given all of your step daughters details.

Can you please call Wendy Lee, Deputy Head of Radiology Services, on Tel: 01302 366666 ext 4506 to discuss this. I have given Wendy the details of your concerns and she is expecting your call.

Regards

Gill Pickersgill

Thanks for your reply, which would have been helpful if you'd actually given me the right number for Wendy Lee who is actually based at Bassetlaw and this contact number is for someone in Doncaster. The only Wendy Lee at Doncaster works in gynaecology.

So now I've been passed round the houses and made 2 separate phone calls to 2 people who didn't have a clue what I was talking about.

It's good to talk as the old saying goes but it would help if it was the right person and right telephone number.
