About: South Tyneside District Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

the friendliest of the staff, being able to keep in contact with friends by the internet.

What could be improved

the choice of meals

the quanity/quality of the meals

a hot breakfast i.e toast like sunderland hosp.

a biscuit or sandwich for supper.

longer visiting hours i.e 1-8pm like some of the other wards

Anything else?

my daughter does not like the hospital food so i had to bring her dinner and tea in for her so ,just so she would eat something, the only thing she ordered was the fruit juice.,she asked for toast and was told it was health and safety the patients couldnt have it ,but the staff had it for breakfast.my daughter was seriously ill and she was woken up at 7am and had nothing to get up for until visiting time, the doctor seen her 4 times in two weeks

Response from South Tyneside District Hospital

Thank you for letting us know about your daughters experience in hospital. I am sorry that she did not like the hospital food. We do have arrangements to provide alternative choices if there is nothing suitable on the menu and I apologise if this was not made clear. I will make sure our catering team receives your comments so they can improve any aspects of the service which are needed.

Thank you also for your comments about visiting times. I am sorry that the more restricted times which are now in place in some wards are not always popular with some patients. However, many patients have told us they prefer this and feel that they need periods of uninterrupted rest so that they can recover from their illness. This time between visiting also allows important ward work to be done to make sure patients get the care they need.

I am pleased that you found the staff to be friendly and appreciated the internet service.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to let us know your views

Kind regards

Lorraine Lambert
