"I know all my carers"

About: Independent Living Services - ILS South & East Ayrshires

(as a service user),

I live in an adapted house which is great for my wife and I. There is a bedroom and shower downstairs and the kitchen is all at low level. When my problem started and I first started using a wheelchair my wife couldn’t drive but she learned and now we have an accessible van and can get out and about. My wife managed all my care until she had to go in to hospital for her knee replacement. The council provided care at home for six weeks then referred me to ILS as it was too heavy work for my wife to continue.

It’s the same two girls that come to provide all my care. When they are off I know all the girls that cover their leave. On the days I go to the day centre the carers come in early to get me ready and make sure it’s not stressful and rushed.

A small improvement would be name badges. When new carers start they don’t get name badges for the first couple of weeks but I think it’s important that you know who they are when they are coming into your house.
