I got an electric wheelchair from social work in April/May to help me get around easier at home. I haven’t really been able to use it though as I bump into things and it’s difficult to get through doors. At the moment I can only use it at the day centre. I use a manual chair when I go out for my shopping because I’m worried about using the electric chair. I don’t have anything I’m able to use easily at home.
It’s not easy moving around my house in a wheelchair because there is not much space. For example when I go in to the kitchen I need to think how I’m going to get back out. I wish they would take into account my wheelchair when I apply for housing.
I did go to Irvine central to test using an electric chair before I got it and I did ok. The occupational therapist was meant to come and see me at home but they didn’t come. It’s a good chair but I feel I could do so much more with it.
