"Deeply Dissapointed"

About: The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (King's Lynn)

My partner and I visited the A&E on Tuesday due to an insect bite on her leg, that had made her leg very swollen, red and extremely painful. I am no expert, but even I could see that it looked like some sort of spider bite. We saw a nurse practitioner and all they kept saying was, "I have seen worse swelling". Not even noticing the two puncture marks on her skin, which I pointed out a couple of times. We got sent away with a script for antibiotics and antihistamine. On the Thursday she is admitted to Addenbrookes with a spider bite and is put on a drip and is awaiting surgery to see what the damage is. I am extremely angry with the fact that this nurse was more concerned in telling me they have seen worse swelling than actually listening to us as a patient. We even told them that we were given a antihistamine to take four times a day and they couldn't think of any like that. The they advised us to get chlorphenamin, which lo and behold, you take one, four times a day!

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your experience in the Emergency Department. I am sorry that you did not feel listened to and that your partner has experienced on-going problems with the insect bite on her leg requiring further treatment. I will ensure this information is shared with the Emergency Department so that the staff can review the decisions that were made at the time. I hope that your partner is now making a good recovery. If you would like to discuss this matter further please contact me directly.
