"Out Patients"

About: University Hospital Of North Durham

When visiting the outpatients department and being weighed before seeing the consultant, do people who are being weighed have to do so with the door open? People who are waiting to be weighed sit on seats about 7 foot away. The door is left open and everyone can hear the weight of the person being weighed.

When I was weighed I said that I did not want to know my weight to which the elderly lady weighing me replied "I can never understand why people always say I dont want to know my weight" This is possibly because the person being weighed really is not too keen on everyone knowing their weight!! Were is the dignity and respect for the patient. I was seen by a consultant at North tees hospital and was weighed behind a closed door.

Thank you for providing feedback on your experience of the out-patient department at the University Hospital of Northe Durham.

I am very sorry to hear that you were unhappy with your experience and I have asked the Matron for a response for you and she has said: 'We are very sorry for your experience and our failure to ensure your privacy and dignity.

Staff have been reminded that the door to the weigh room should be closed at all time prior to taking a weight. It is interesting that you choose not to be told your weight primarily because of the issue of privacy, this is fully understandable and this comment will be shared at staff meetings across all outpatient areas in the Trust.'

We would welcome the opportunity to discuss your concerns with you and if you would like to contact us with some more detail it would enable the Matron/Manager to look into your concerns for you.

If you feel this would be useful please contact the Trust’s Patient Experience Team on 0800 7835774.
