My daughter was an inpatient (referred by CAMHS) for about 3 months. She was only 13 at the time. With hindsight, I am aware that this was not necessarily the best choice for her. There were 2 very lovely, but very damaged and sectioned older girls there who taught her how to self harm in many ways that she hadn't thought of - she also developed an eating disorder there (again copied from one of the other girls). She was allowed to watch films that were 15 rated without my consent. I firmly believe that the age ranges need to be more segregated but also understand that it is totally impossible in that building. The day staff were wonderful and very caring whilst doing a hugely difficult job. I think that there were too many agency staff on at night, some with very poor English skills, so, when problems arose, there were not enough skilled staff to cope.
