"kidney transplant"

About: Manchester Royal Infirmary

My father recently had a kidney transplant at Manchester Royal and was on Ward 9.

He was operated on through the night by one of the best surgeons and we are immensely grateful to him.

He received the best of treatment given to him by the dedicated doctors and nurses during his 2 week stay in the hospital.

My father also had dialysis at the hospital and the care given was equally as good.

The nurses despite being extremely busy managed to spare a few moments to chat to their patients which was lovely to see and they kept us informed at all times.

During the stay at the hospital my father had been very sick through the night and was having to have a scan.He felt too ill to walk to the radiology department so a porter came to collect him to take him in the wheelchair. Before he left the ward one of the nurses came and wrapped a blanket around him to make him more comfortable. This doesn't seem like much but its little things like this that showed how much the nurses cared about their patients. They represented the best of the nursing profession. The utmost care and respect at all times.

They were very strict about visiting times and not allowing more than 2 people around the bed at any one time but this was totally understandable so as not to tire the patient. Also after transplant due to the patient being given anti rejection drugs it is important not to enter the ward with any infections due to the patients lower immunity.

I have only given the hospital a one for cleanliness as in the main areas of the hospital the bins were overflowing for days and toilets were not clean enough. In particular toilet brushes which should have been disposed of due to infection risks.

Overall I have given a 5 star review as the represents the wonderful care given.

Thank you Ward 9 and Manchester Royal.

Thank you for your comments posted on the NHS Choices and Patient Opinion websites regarding your father’s care at Manchester Royal Infirmary. It was very kind of you to write and compliment our services, as it is good to receive positive feedback that reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff.

We are pleased to hear that you found the staff to be caring, compassionate and informative. It was also reassuring to hear that your father’s care and treatment were timely and efficient, and that your overall experience has been a very positive one. This is the standard we expect for all our patients and their families. I can assure you that we have passed on your positive comments to all the staff involved.

We are sorry that you found the public areas of the hospital to be unclean as we work very hard to ensure high standards of cleanliness throughout the hospital. We are undertaking a full review of cleaning in these very busy locations and hope that this work will improve our ability to maintain high standards. You are correct to comment that we should remove any toilet brushes that are not in an appropriate state and we will remind all our teams that they should do this as part of their daily routine.
