Following a long struggle to be offered surgery I had an apt in July. Great relief, the surgeon explained every thing in depth & to the point, and I felt confident I had the best result. 8 weeks later I was in for Surgery 19th September. Booked in to await my turn which was midday by which time I was very cold as there was no heating in room. I was not concerned about the op as I knew life could only be better and all of the Theatre staff were so friendly & reassuring & a big Thank you to the lovely nurse who cared for me in recovery & getting a hot blanket to defrost me. The nurse had to make 2 requests for me to be collected back to ward!
I had to ask 3 times for a long over due drink & toast. Early evening as i was in a lot of discomfort with my leg I asked if I could have a towel under my knee to relieve pressure to be told ( very abruptly) No. Fortunately the night staff came on (Angels of Mercy) by which time I was in a lot of pain. What a different attitude, nothing was to much trouble. I was helped with support to my leg, washed, calmed etc & I was able to sleep. The nurses had a very busy time, as most patients were uncomfortable apparently. I wake at 4.30 am & was offered a lovely cuppa.
Sunday briefly saw physio & my surgeon & I start to get mobile. Left to your own devices really which was a problem sometimes ie bathroom etc. Again night staff were so friendly & helpful. I chose to go to Woodthorpe as my husband had a knee replacement there last year & we were happy with the outcome.
I would rate Surgeon, Theatre/Recovery Staff & Night Staff plus the aux nurse as outstanding & caring. Some of the Day Staff were detached, did not communicate well & gave the impression not in the job as a vocation! Particulary disappointing was the physio who did not complete instructions on stairs training (prior to my release) but insisted they had, plus a colleague supported the physio saying they must have shown me as it was written down. Bad Attitude. If you were a shy retiring type this could have been upsetting.
I would recommend this hospital but advise patient to be aware.
