"Aftercare on day surgery unit"

About: North Devon District Hospital

I had the misfortune to have to spend time on this unit on Wednesday 21st October. All of the staff before and during my surgery were absolutely fantastic. Things went rapidly down hill on my return to the ward. Other patients in my bay proceeded to chat, loudly, for most of the afternoon. Then nursing staff came and joined in with them. So absolutely no chance of a quiet recovery. I am an insulin dependent diabetic, and I was offered nothing to eat or drink, and my blood sugar was not checked until I was leaving at approximately 4:30. You do not allow partners into recovery, but I would have rather had listened to him, than all the gossip from the staff. I will be putting in a formal complaint, which I will also be copying to my surgeon and GP.

Dear Patient

I was very sorry to learn of your recent experience during your stay on the ward, following surgery, and would like to apolgise on behalf of the ward for the noise and disruption.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss your concerns and would be grateful if you could contact the PALS department ( Patient Advice and Liaison Department) on 01271 314090 to speak with someone or alternatively email your concerns at ndht.pals@nhs.net
