I have just rang outpatients to check when I will receive my appointment with an ophthalmologist. It transpired from my telephone conversation that I might have to wait 18 weeks for an appointment. This is in contrast with the hospital statement in the official website that informs us that the average waiting time from referral to treatment with a ophthalmologist is 9 weeks.
I do believe that waiting 18 weeks for an appointment to an specialist is deplorable.
The aim of my message is not to blame anybody, but alert you that this situation can damage the health of your patients.
The NHS emphasises how important prevention is. I believe that the NHS is not acting as it preaches, at least in the Department of Ophthalmology.
