"Infection Control"

About: Heartlands Hospital / Urology

(as a relative),

I have to say I am appalled at the distinct lack of infection control precautions taken. Over the past few days I have witnessed as what appears to be the normal practice of all staff wearing PPE such as gloves and apron as they wander around the ward from one bay to the next. Yesterday I was appalled when a member of staff presented herself in a bay wearing gloves and apron and proceeded to take blood glucose measurements from three different patients wearing the same gloves and apron. Today after sitting as a visitor for a good few hours and getting more annoyed at the care provision or lack of it, I was absolutely astonished to witness another member of staff donning gloves and apron wake a patient to change his incontinence pad (I knew this as it was made obvious to everyone in the bay as to what was happening), the staff member proceeded, closed the curtains and did the necessary task, opened the curtains, walked to the bin, put her rubbish in the bin, walked up to the next person in the bay wearing the same gloves and apron to proceed to complete the end of bed notes, this behaviour continued until she had completed all notes she needed to in the bay. What was good about this? Nothing whatsoever, it appears that the staff on this ward ( or most of them) do not take infection control seriously and appear to wear apron and gloves for their own protection rather than protecting patients. What could be better? Do I really need to answer that? Can you really imagine how I feel leaving a loved one in the care of your staff who in my opinion are incompetent of such a basic skill as infection control precautions...
