My experience to A E was a mixture of disgust for the way patients were left in corridors for hours on end with no dignity, to admiration to the staff working under intolerable conditions trying to give patients as much care as they could.
I spent 10 hours in A E and apart from 2 hours in the corridor was treated with nothing but respect and courtesy from most of the staff I came in contact with. I found in my case they were very thorough, and as a result was kept in over night.
These people work their butts off but are over whelmed by the shear numbers of patients in their care and a department that in my opinion, is inadequate for the Medway area.
Medway needs a new A E that can fulfil the needs of the people it serves, patients left in corridors for hours on end, most very vulnerable, afraid and confused is not acceptable.
It scares me that one day that patient left in that corridor will be me or my wife.
Oh yes one other thing, I was in Keats ward, 27 patients and a shower that was extremely dirty and only had cold water. I did mention it to the staff but all I got was a shrug of shoulders and advised to use one of the showers in another ward.
